Estelle played a substantial role in the building's interior and exterior layout and design, and she was especially proud of the open-air extension of the ground-floor reserve room. In an era when smoking was permitted almost everywhere, readers had to adjust to her strict no-smoking policy even in the Library's outdoor area.
